Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe:A Daily Guide to Scripture-Based Prayer
by Sharon Jaynes
Prayer should be the utmost important thing in my life. Praying the Word of God is what sustains me in all of my relationships. When I slack in this area, I immediately see the change in my words, thoughts, moods and actions.
When I go for any length of time of not praying for my husband, even when things are great, I can slip into an attitude of ungratefulness and selfishness toward him. Marriage then becomes all about me instead of about us.
I've learned over the years that prayer for my husband changes with growth, needs and seasons. In this season and growth period, I desire to pray more of God’s Word over my husband, not words of my own desire for him. Thinking back over the course of those twenty plus years though, most of my prayers have been reactive. I've gone to the Lord for Scott in times of need, or at the result of something he, or we, were struggling with. I've prayed selfishly, for changes I wanted in Scott, but not always for God's will. I want to pray for God’s mighty work in his life, not my to do list.
Sharon Jayne’s new book, Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe: A Daily Guide to Scripture-Based Prayer, gives me ample opportunity to do so!
The most important work we can do as wives is on our knees in prayer.
Thirty days of prayer over my husband will change my focus and thoughts. Every part of his body bathed in God’s washing, loving Word.. Prayer should not be the last resort, it should always be the first step in any situation.
As I started reading Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe, I was pleased to see the immediate Scripture references in the introduction. I knew that this wasn't a book that came from a human point of view, but God-breathed because of the Word shared. Sharon doesn't just give you a guide, she lays out each beautiful prayer for you. God surely worked through her pen to provide prayers that He knew every single wife would need. Whether you are newly-weds or celebrating a golden anniversary, there is good in this book for your marriage. I would even say that a single woman could use this book to pray for her husband to be.
Sharon starts with sharing the power and importance of prayer for our husbands.
“As a wife, you have the power to open the floodgates of heaven through prayer on your husband’s behalf. Whether your husband hasn't yet decided to follow Christ, has a lukewarm fledgling faith, or lives a fiery firm faith, there is no one more qualified to pray for his relationship with Christ than you.” – Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe (pg. 6)
Prayer is spiritual warfare and a dialogue with our heavenly Father. The weapons that we fight with are not weapons of this world. Its more powerful than that!
While we don’t have authority over our husbands, we do have authority over the enemy who seeks to harm him (Luke 10:19).
What, exactly, are we praying over our husband’s bodies?
Physical landmarks of his outer body are used to represent spiritual, psychological, and emotional aspects of his inner man:
- His Mind: What He Thinks About
- His Eyes: What He Looks At
- His Ears: What He Listens To
- His Mouth: The Words He Speaks
- His Neck: The Decisions That Turn His Head
- His Shoulders: His Burdens and Worries
- His Heart: Who or What He Loves
- His Back: His Protection
- His Arms: His Strength
- His Hands: His Work
- His Ring Finger: His Marriage
- His Side: His Relationships
- His Sexuality: His Need for Physical Intimacy
- His Legs: His Stand on the Truth
- His Knees: His Relationship with God
- His Feet: His Walk
Not only has Sharon laid out what I am praying over and protecting from hubby’s head to his toes, she then lays out 30 days of prayers. Simply incredible…here are a few examples for the body part being prayed for, the Bible verse that relates and the prayer being said.
His MouthSet a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3Set a guard over my husband’s mouth, O Lord, and keep watch over the door of his lips. Don’t let any unwise or ungodly word slip into his conversation. His Ring FingerTwo are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: if one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Ecclesiastes 4:9-10Lord, thank you that my husband and I have each other. Bind our hearts together s that we can help each other up when we fall and celebrate with each other when we succeed. Remove any sense of competition, contention, or one-upmanship, and show us how to live in unity as man and wife as You intended. Help us to be a tightly braided cord of three stands intertwined with You.His NeckGive me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Psalm 119:34God of all wisdom, when my husband has to make a decision today, I pray he will weigh his options on the scale of Your Word. Give him understanding so he will know the right path to take and the best choice to make. His ArmsBut as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. 2 Chronicles 15:7Strengthen my husband so that he will not give up, grow weary, or get discouraged. I ask that You equip, energize, and encourage him with the power of the Holy Spirit. Please reward him with blessings outpoured as he completes the work You have called him to do.
